  1. I personally wouldn’t blame FF16 for “increasing abuse” or whatever, that’s going into straight up Jack Thompson territory.

I have to say things ain’t looking good for Sony here after the judge interrupted the FTC’s ridiculous hand-wringing about the “harm to Sony” saying she only cared about the hard to consumers, not some big corporation(and rightfully so).

    • To be clear, I am not “blaming” FF16 as an individual game, of course not, that would be fucking ridiculous of me.

But I do maintain that it is one of the most directexamples you can point to of how media trends towards certain depictions of what bigotry “looks like”, that as a whole have an impact on how people see what counts as “real bigotry”.

Like, I’d compare the impact of this general media trend by pointing to Deadly Premonition 2, in which the protagonist says to a trans woman, and is not corrected or challenged, “You were never a victim of transphobia, they didn’t beat you in the street or burn you at the stake, did they?”

Like, that is a legitimate enough view that Swery made that something his heroeic “pro trans” protatonist said out loud, and got as far as the game publishing without nobody suggesting it be changed. that is a view real people have, and no, FF16 didn’t “cause” that, it’s an example of the kinds of media that contribute to people having those beliefs about what counts as “real” hate crimes etc.
