I must disagree with you on the original FF7, I think it’s aged badly in many ways and the writing on you-know-who is one of them. I get the feeling you and Jim are kinda reluctant to admit that the way that character was handled would be considered problematic by today’s standards since they essentially get fridged just to provide another character with motivation to take down the main villain. Let’s face it if FF7 came out today you would have loads of think-pieces of sites like Polygon and Kotaku ripping the game a new one for that and rightfully so IMO. If the new FF7 just does the same thing again that would be cowardly and lazy if you ask me, I don’t know why people automatically assume that if this one character survives that means “no consequences”. Whose to say there won’t be other consequences as a result of this character surviving? I say have you-know-who live this time around but kill off a different character that survived the original game, that would shock a lot of people and make fans of the other character happy.
